How Street Woman Fighter 3 Hit Me Right in the Feels (ft. Monika, HoneyJ, and My Dancer Past)

A nostalgic review by Damoyuh’s founder, connecting the dots between K-dance culture, K-fashion, and the rise of street girl power

This post is part reaction, part memoir, and part love letter to the dance world — sparked by the recent premiere of World of Street Woman Fighter (a.k.a. Street Woman Fighter Season 3). This season is not just a dance competition. It’s a global showdown, a world-class battle royale featuring powerhouse crews from Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. But before I get into the show — let me backtrack.

When Dance Was My World

Embarrassed to admit it now, but I was a serious dancer in college (a decade ago!). From 2009–2011, I trained at Millennium Dance Complex and the now-closed Debbie Reynolds Studio in LA — and trust me, everyone there was insanely talented. I always felt like I was playing catch-up, but I was competitive and hungry to improve. Some of the choreographers I trained under — like Kyle Hanagami — weren’t the global icons they are now. Back then, dancers didn’t have the mainstream spotlight they do today. That’s why this new Mnet show hits differently for me.

In 2011, I studied abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul — and that’s when I met Monika from PROWDMON (Season 1) — before she blew up. She became like a sister to me. I trained under her almost every week. Her charisma was unmatched, and she had this bold, hip-hop style that was rare among female dancers in Korea at the time. That’s what drew me to her.

I also trained under LipJ, Monika’s dance partner and waacking queen. Waacking, by the way, is brutal — you need insane core strength. Half our classes were just us doing plank challenges and core drills to prep for sharp, clean lines. I was dying.

Then, Monika told me I needed to learn some “lady-like” moves (LOL) — so she sent me to HoneyJ of HolyBang. Her style was fierce and sexy — and I… sucked. I just couldn’t stop cringing at myself. But HoneyJ was so supportive, and eventually both she and Monika cheered me on when I launched my streetwear brand, Motiv Co., in 2016.

Imagine my shock when I saw “Team Motiv” on this season of Street Woman Fighter — using the slogan “What’s Your Motiv?” (missing the “e”) — which I literally trademarked with my lawyer friend years ago. Cringe and proud moment all in one. I wondered if Monika or HoneyJ thought about me for even a second… but lowkey hope they didn’t LOL. I still remember Monika begging me not to get a tattoo of my brand name, thinking it might jinx me. (She wasn’t wrong.)

Fast Forward — From Underground to Mainstream

Back in the day, these dancers were underground legends — known for winning local battles, not for appearing on TV. None of us thought they’d become mainstream celebrities. But here we are — K-pop exploded, and Mnet gave these women the spotlight they always deserved.

Side story: My own dance journey almost spiraled into K-pop girl group training. (Yes… cringe.) At the time, girl groups like Girls’ Generation and Kara were ruling the charts, so I was told to tone down my “tomboy” vibes and dance more “cute.” Fast forward to today — the baggy, 2000s tomboy look is in. Let me just brag real quick and say I was ahead of my time, okay?

The Show: A World Cup of Dance

Now, back to Street Woman Fighter 3. The theme this season? Global domination. It’s being framed like the World Cup of dance — a high-stakes, multinational showdown that merges street culture with mainstream flair.

Some highlights to watch for:

• A Japanese rivalry: Osaka vs. Tokyo
• Royal Family, a powerhouse team from New Zealand, is split between the new and OG generations — tension is high
• Korea? They’re stacked with returning all-stars from past seasons, mostly team leaders from Season 1
• New MC alert — no more Daniel Kang. This season’s host is ZEROBASEONE’s Sung Han Bin

One thing I noticed: It almost feels like the producers intentionally made the other countries clash early while letting Korea slowly rise. Maybe it’s editing, maybe strategy, maybe both.

Expect subtitles — thick accents from Australia, New Zealand, and Japan might slow you down, but it’s worth it. The cinematography, lighting, and music drops are all top-tier. Mnet didn’t hold back.

Oh — and side note — why is JYP’s English better than mine?! I was born and raised in LA and went to law school. But somehow his vocabulary sounds smoother on camera. Even if he keeps repeating, “You were powerful. Very assertive.” LOL.

Final Thoughts

Watching this show feels surreal. I see fragments of the dance world I once lived in. It makes me proud, nostalgic, a little cringey, and a lot inspired.
